As the piston pressure seals degrade over time, due to heat and repeated flex during braking, the pistons can become sticky which leads to brake drag, overheating the brake system, or poor handling/performance.

Dust boots are also available and can be used to prevent dirt and/or moisture from entering the piston cavity. If dirt or moisture enters, it can lead to tearing of the piston seal/loss of fluid and poor brake performance.
